The Silent Yogi, a Teacher by Example

Revered by thousands of seekers as a realized master, Sadguru Atma Malik Mauli has dedicated His life to meditation, self-realization and the awakening of the Atma in every human being. His silence became His discourse, His discipline His message, His life His scripture.

The greatest Guru does not ask you to worship Him. He awakens you to discover the Guru within, the Atma.

His story · six chapters

Sadguru is first publicly recognized for thirty-two years of tapasya at Yeola in Nashik district, in deep meditation under austere conditions, supported by yoga, fasting and a minimal diet.

For Sadguru, meditation was never an escape from the world. It is the means through which every individual can discover the truth that already exists within.

He travelled on foot across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. These Padayatras carried one message: the divine is not distant, it resides in one's own heart as the Atma.

Out of deep devotion to Sadguru Jangali Maharaj, whose samadhi is in Pune, He came to be known as Janglidas Maharaj, the servant of Jangali Maharaj.

As the teaching evolved, the emphasis shifted from the personality of the Guru to the realization of the Atma within every seeker. They are the same enlightened Master, known by different names at different stages.

The earlier greeting "Om Gurudev" was transformed into "Atma Malik", meaning the Atma is the Master. It reminds every seeker that the destination is the divine presence within one's own heart.

He did not rely on lengthy philosophical explanation, because meditation is experiential and each seeker must discover its truth personally. Devotees affectionately call Him the Silent Yogi.

Under His guidance the mission developed Gurukul-inspired education, where academic learning is complemented by discipline, compassion, self-confidence and spiritual awareness, and expanded into ashrams, centres, publications and outreach.

Importance of Sadhguru

A guide who teaches by awakening, not by explaining

The inward journey is experiential, so Sadguru guides by example rather than explanation. Each sadhak awakens his or her own inner eye and the pure love-energy of the Atma, and gathers personal experiences that confirm the practice. For this, devotees call Him the Silent Yogi.

After thirty-two years of austere meditation at Yeola, with yoga, fasting and a spare diet, and a period in a cave on Ankai Mountain, He walked from place to place sharing the message of the Atma within. Swami Muktanand is said to have recognised His spiritual potential. Sadguru's one prayer was for the ability to feed everyone who came to Him and to show them the path to liberation.

Devotees first gathered around a small hut in Karadga, Karnataka. As the community grew, the salutation changed from "Om Gurudev" to "Atma Malik", recognising the Soul as the master within each person. He emphasised self-reliance, fasting and the purification of body and mind, and treated every follower equally.
